Originally painted in Saint Petersburg in 2019, “Garbage” is one of Mark Rox’s earliest works exploring what humanity leaves behind. A dense accumulation of abandoned vehicles fills the entire composition, transforming familiar objects into a monumental landscape of industrial waste. The work reflects on a world in which society already produces more than it can use. Cars, once symbols of freedom, progress and personal status, appear here as disposable objects — crowded together, stripped of their purpose and destined to remain long after their owners have moved on. Through this image, Rox anticipates the decline of petrol-powered vehicles and the vast automobile graveyards that may follow. Garbage raises a broader question at the centre of the artist’s practice: what will remain after us, and how much of our idea of progress will eventually become waste?
